Surviving Mommy is a triumph over adversity, but it's also a love story. Anna's love for her brother, and for her mother.  Even if you have to survive your mommy's neglect, you still love her and want the best for her and want that happy loving family life together that you used to have. 5 stars.

Anna's detailed descriptions of her experiences in 1970's San Francisco, communicates her overwhelming emotions of  sadness, fear and frustration, intermingled with episodes of love and joy.  A sense of longing to just be a kid and the confusion that resulted from adults constantly disappointing her pervades her narrative.  I'm grateful that she had the strength and courage to survive to tell her story.

Anna’s memoir is so strong and well-written. She took us with her on her journey and is an empathetic strong character I really admire.  Her book has everything to make it compelling.

Anna is a caring, nurturing, and protective sister in this book. She has creative and artistic gifts and a “survival” determination to create a safe place. Her passion for people to be seen, heard and loved came through as I read about her childhood. I smiled at similar memories and am grateful she wrote this memoir.

“Surviving Mommy” brings to life the experiences and challenges of childhood when a parent struggles with being present and available for her children. The stories shared show the strength it took to be a care taker by the author for her mother, brother and herself. There were moments where I cried, felt anger and shock at the struggle of her childhood. But there were also moments where I experienced laughter, smiles and recognized the love that sustained the author through the pain of her childhood. I would wholeheartedly encourage others to read this book.

Sajovic tells us in her child-like voice of her growing up from age five to eleven, in San Francisco, with her mother who is chasing an illusion. It exudes authenticity and is filled with detail that contextualizes the action in a real time and space. Young Anna braves through unlikely and sometimes dangerous experiences that reveal her innate curiosity and intelligence, demonstrating both cunning and personal generosity.

Surviving Mommy is a raw and honest look at what it means to grow up with insecurity and instability. Anna writes of the resilience of her child self woven throughout her story. What makes this book so powerful is how honest it feels, showing how strength can come from surviving.

From page one you’re pulled into the world of this little girl and you never leave her side. Watching her try to operate in an adult world — one that most adults themselves can’t handle — is both devastating and powerful. Surviving Mommy is a story that stays with you long after you finish.

Surviving Mommy is sad yet heartwarming. At a very young age, Anna must step up and become the responsible, stable provider for herself and her little brother. This young girl's courageous adventures through the streets of San Francisco will absolutely capture you. I felt every single emotion while reading - it touched my heart and soul. The author’s strength, courage and determination make this a must read. Have your tissues ready!
